Last October, David Carr wrote about the Stats Monkey, a sportswriting robot being developed at Northwestern University. Now Business Week has returned to check in on the thing. Their findings? It’s getting smarter (or at least less bad)!
The company says it is continually trying to make the system “a less bad writer,” as Kristian Hammond, a Northwestern computer scientist and his partner in Narrative Science, puts it. Adds Frankel: “The 1,000th story of a subject is materially better than the first.”
Who knows, they might even be able to program a version that’s extra nice, just for Newsday.
