Time is running out for New Jersey Supreme Court Justice John Wallace, who must be renominated and confirmed by May 22, or he’s out of a job. Gov. Christopher Christie’s delay in filling the seat has caused some judicial watchers to wonder if Wallace might become the first sitting Justice not to win reappointment to a tenured seat. The Senate Judiciary Committee has a meeting on May 13, and there is a requirement that notice of a judicial nomination be submitted seven days in advance. While the Senate can be somewhat flexible in their scheduling, May 6 might be the deadline. The Senate has a voting session scheduled for May 20. There is no holdover status for judges.
A political consideration for Christie: Wallace is the only African American on the Supreme Court, and is one of two South Jerseyans.
