A day after he settled in for the evening inaugural of Mayor Brian P. Stack, Gov. Chris Christie returned to Union City today to participate in a celebration of Cuban Independence Day with the mayor/state senator.
The trip to the North Hudson County Democratic Party stronghold sent a ripple of concern through Democrat land. Why is the Republican governor traveling with political impunity on the home turf of U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez (D-Hoboken), who’s up for re-election in 2012?
A point of concern is Christie’s comfort level in the Latino-centric city, where the hands-on Stack is Menendez’s first choice to run the embattled Hudson County Democratic Organization. Stack’s spokesman said the mayor was honored by Christie’s second visit in as many days, and noted the eagerness of many Democrats to also make the pilgrimage to Union City.
“Good government produces political success,” said Mark Albiez.
