Hunterdon County Sheriff Deborah Trout has been indicted on seven counts of official misconduct. Also indicted was Undersheriff Michael Russo. County prosecutors allege that Tout allowed Russo to supervise his own background investigation, and for approving a handgun permit to a former investigator who was later convicted of falsifying information on his employment application.
Trout is not seeking re-election to a second term, and Russo is a candidate for the Republican nomination for Warren County Sheriff.
