Today, writing on behalf of Standard & Poor’s, where she is now a communications official, Ms. Mathis has a response to a Times editorial by David Einhorn. Last week, he wrote a piece that said it’s time to “get rid of” credit agencies like Standard & Poor’s. Ms. Mathis does not like the idea of this!

From our standpoint, credit ratings are a starting point — not the ending point — of sound investment research. The market benefits from competing views on credit risk, whether from ratings firms or others.

Ms. Mathis left the Times Company in August, and was replaced by Bob Christie in March.
