Jim Walton, president of CNN, announced today that his network will no longer publish stories from the Associated Press after decades of collaboration between the two news organizations.
As newsrooms and news-gathering budgets have dwindled, wire stories have gained more prominence. By dropping the AP, CNN is making a bet that it will be better off in the long-run if it doesn’t pick up the same filler as other websites.
“It will provide consumers with the unique news and information experience they expect from CNN,” said Mr. Walton. “And it will make us more creative, resourceful and collaborative journalists and news professionals.”
