Attorney General Andrew Cuomo has begun an investigation into possible incidents of discrimination at two Manhattan Apple stores, Politico reports. The case involves reported incidents wherein employees, fearing illegal international resales, made it difficult for people of Chinese descent to buy iPads. There goes Apple’s perfect track record with the Chinese!
The issue was first brought to light last month by Queens assemblywoman Grace Meng. In a letter to Apple Meng said Asian constituents were forced to answer prying questions or provide their passport before successfully purchasing an iPad, with some unable to purchase the device at all.
“One person was asked why they wanted one since their English was not so good,” Meng said. “I want to get an explanation.”
Having finally announced his candidacy for governor, Cuomo should probably tread lightly on this one. He’s already ditched the WFP nomination and would be ill-advised to lose the burgeoning iPad caucus.
