A night before he anticipates receiving the backing of the Hudson County Democratic Organization (HCDO) for the chairmanship, Mayor Mark Smith’s two council candidates won tonight in Bayonne, bringing the mayor’s record this cycle to 6-0.
In runoff elections tonight, Smith ally Agnes Gillespie won in the First Ward over independent Thomas Cotter; and in the Third Ward, Smith ally Ray Greaves beat incumbent Gary LaPelusa.
On May 11th, the mayor and three of his council candidates won over a slate captained by embattled Assemblyman Tony Chiappone.
Those victories left Smith with the additional task of getting Gillespie and Greaves elected in tonight’s runoff.
“First time in the history of Bayonne that a mayor has swept the council,” said Jason O’Donnell, chair of the local Democratic Party.
