After pleading guilty last week to illegal use of campaign funds, Assemblyman Tony Chiappone (D-Bayonne) will have to vacate his 31st District seat.
Hudson County sources say Jason O’Donnell, chair of the local Democratic organization, is interested in the traditionally Bayonne-based seat once occupied by former Mayor (and Department of Community Affairs Commish) Joe Doria.
As Mayor Mark Smith’s chief political operative, firefighter O’Donnell was a fierce opponent of Chiappone’s.
Chiappone lost his mayoral bid to Smith in May.
Barring an uprising by state Sen. Sandra Cunningham (D-Jersey City), there will be few – if any – impediments to O’Donnell’s receiving the nod to assume the seat Chiappone must vacate after Sept. 10th, as
Smith is the new unanimously elected chairman of the Hudson County Democratic Organization (HCDO).
