Welcome to The Back Room

Welcome to The Back Room.

Smiles Everyone, Smiles!

Now that I’ve just dated myself with a Fantasy Island reference, let’s get down to business.

If you’re reading this column you’ve made your way to The Back Room, the place where the real work gets done.  In this space you’ll find the analysis, the dirty truth and the inside scoop you’ve come to expect from PolitickerNJ over the years.

We’ve got some great things in store for this space and we hope you’ll stop by often to check in.  If there is one thing I’ve learned covering Trenton politics it’s that all of us – the politicians, aides, lobbyists and media that make up the statehouse circus take ourselves way too seriously sometimes. So with that in mind, one goal of The Back Room will be to have some fun.

If you’ve got a tip, the same rules that have always governed this site still apply: You will be treated as anonymous and your identity will never be leaked to anyone.  If you’ve got a gripe, kudos or a complaint, you know who I am and I’m ready to listen.

As for the rest of the site, we’ve already been hard at work. In the last week, we’ve added a new Op-Ed feature, where you the reader can weigh in.  If you have an opinion or a response to something you’ve seen on the site, Op-Ed is your spot to reply.

There are a couple of rules. First, I’ll decide what gets posted and while I’ll never change the content, I reserve the right to edit for length.  Second, while we encourage strong opinions and passionate responses from all sides of a debate, I won’t post attack columns or name-calling. Save that for your press releases. Outside of that, pretty much anything goes.  I invite all of you to send in an Op-Ed and I plan to post as many as possible.

Over the next few weeks I am planning to introduce some new features and some old favorites will be making a comeback.  We’ve got a new Power List on the way, Winners and Losers will make a triumphant return and Cage Match, where we break down the political battle of the week, will make its debut.

And while those features are the gravy that makes the site tasty, the meat of PolitickerNJ is our day to day political coverage.  Max Pizarro, a three-year veteran of PolitickerNJ will continue to scour the state for the best in local political news and we will have two reporters devoted to the statehouse.  You want the most up to date news in the state?  Come to us. You want it first and you want it right? Pay us a visit.  We won’t disappoint.

Lastly, to borrow yet one more cliché – news of our demise has been greatly exaggerated.  Since Wally Edge retired his quill last month, readership hasn’t suffered.  The loyal readers who make this site what it is have continued to visit, while new readers keep coming. For that, I thank you.

I don’t plan to fill Wally Edge’s shoes.  The man was an icon in political circles and his legacy is huge.  Besides, the man was 136 and his shoes were pretty funky.

But what I will do is carry on his spirit.

Wally once described Trenton politics as the best of spectator sports and I believe he was right.  So with that in mind, I hope in the coming weeks and months you’ll continue to visit us to enjoy the game.

If you’ve been a fan, I invite you to get to know the new PolitickerNJ.  If you’re just joining us, welcome and  please stay awhile.
