Vanity Fair contributing editor Christopher Hitchens has been diagnosed with cancer, according to The Washington Post‘s Reliable Source blog. Hints of deterorating health first came yesterday, when Politico noted that the author had canceled parts of his book tour.
Hitchens himself kept a stiff upper lip about the whole thing with a short post on the Vanity Fair Web site. “I have been advised by my physician that I must undergo a course of chemotherapy on my esophagus,” he wrote. “This advice seems persuasive to me.”
Oddly enough, the Facebook “Likes” on The Washington Post story have been growing exponentially since the news was released. It’s unclear what users are trying to say by “Liking” this story. Do they actually like the idea that the man has cancer? Are they just trying to tell their friends the news? At any rate, it’s a case of bad news made worse by social networking.
