Congressional candidates have to gather at least 2,500 signatures.

“I’m happy to say we did what we needed to do,” Morgan said. “The way I see it, I’ve positioned myself quite nicely.”

Morgan also seemed to be looking beyond this September’s election, saying, “Win or lose, I’m in it for 2012.”

He added: “One way or another, Charlie is leaving, and the new guard is coming in. When you look at the new guard, I’m the only candidate out there.”

Morgan conceded that his fundraising and petitioning numbers will not be as strong as Rangel’s, who filed more 30,000 signatures and had $635, 292 on hand before the most recent filing.

He said however that the early numbers will not matter.

“Keep your eyes on us. I’ve been saving it for the final push.”
