At a lunch hosted by ASME yesterday, Rolling Stone contributor Michael Hastings said that anonymous sources who accused him of using quotes in his piece about General Stanley McChrystal that were off the record are lying. “And they know that,” he said, according to Jeff Bercovici.
“There is absolutely no gray area here. How it works is the reporter goes and hangs out with a subject and writes down what the subject says and does,” Mr. Hastings said. He also compared spending time with journalists to having a pet bear: “Most of the time it’s really cool, but once in a while it’ll bite your hand off.”
