The Essex County Freeholder Clerk sent a fax to the all-Democratic county board last month, including an invitation to a political fundraiser that Phil Alagia, chief of staff to County Executive Joe DiVincenzo, said had just landed in the mail.
Alagia said the clerk, who is on vacation, usually sends mail to the freeholders via fax, but can’t exactly answer for the clerk since she technically works for the freeholders.
An invitation to the $150-per-person the “Democratic Committee Cocktail Reception” at Nanina’s in the Park in Belleville tonight was noted on a cover sheet from clerk, Deborah Davis Ford.
“The invitation clearly shows the name of Teresa Ruiz the vice chairwoman of the Democratic Party, who is also DiVincenzo’s deputy chief of staff,” said Republican opponent Herb Glenn in a press release.
From his release: “(S)uch blatant abuse of county property for politicking is irresponsible and (Glenn) is demanding that DiVincenzo reveal who the fax was distributed to.”
“The county executive is undoubtedly a beneficiary of the cocktail fundraiser for the party that supports him and he should explain who ordered the freeholder clerk to distribute this invitation and tell us who it went to,” said Glenn.
Glenn said DiVincenzo allows the county offices to be run “as if it were a Democratic Party clubhouse in violation of his rules.”
