Former Paterson Police Chief Larry Spagnola wants to be sheriff of Passaic County.
“At this point, I’m running for the position. I’m ready to go back into the mix,” said the seven-year top cop veteran, who served on the force for 40 years before unsuccessfully running for mayor four years ago.
Since the sudden withdrawal yesterday from the race of Sheriff Jerry Speziale, Spagnola said he has received offers not only from Democrats – but Republicans and independents.
“I’ve spoken to a number of individuals in the party – in the parties, I should say,” said the 63-year old law enforcement vet.
“I’m not writing anything off,” he added. My candidacy would be a positive step and I know I could do a good job. I’ve got three separate groups talking to me. I’m not partial to one; I want to see which would be the best for the county. I’d be interested. It’s a wonderful position, and law enforcement is my first love.”
A supporter of Republican Gov. Chris Christie’s last year, Spagnola said he is – and always has been – undeclared.
