Passaic Dems accelerate embrace of Berdnik

Passaic sources say U.S. Rep. Bill Pascrell (D-Paterson) is expected to appear at the Paterson picnic this afternoon with Clifton Police Lieutenant Richard Berdnik, the preferred sheriff’s candidate of Passaic County Democratic Committee Chairman John Currie.

Currie and Pascrell anticipate standing with Berdnik tomorrow to recommend him to the Democratic County Committee, which is scheduled to vote on a sheriff’s nominee on Thursday evening.

The stepped up public projection of Berdnik as the establishment choice comes a day after former Paterson Police Chief Larry Spagnola – an ardent supporter of Republican Chris Christie for governor last year – submitted a formal letter of interest in the sheriff’s job to Currie.

Spagnola brought in legal backup, insisting on a secret ballot and infuriating the chairman, who wanted an unfettered glidepath for Berdnik, sources say. Passaic Dems accelerate embrace of Berdnik
