Sidney Harman spoke to the Newsweek staff in an auditorium at the magazine’s Hudson Street offices yesterday after his purchase of the magazine was complete. He said that he had no interest in cutting the magazine down to size.
“The people are our primary asset,” he said. “How in the world can you pass up the opportunity to lead an organization like this? I have no thought of investing a great deal of money so I can make a great deal of money. I would be delighted over a period of some years to see Newsweek flourish and getting by on its own generated fuel. Break-even is a serious accomplishment, especially in this world, in the world of journalism.”
Mr. Harman also explained his understanding of Newsweek‘s mission, “To make sense of it all! To connect the dots!” he said. “That’s what this publication does and, I think, contrary to much current sport, does it extraordinarily well. I’m a great fan of the current Newsweek.”
