John Girgenti?

Speculation is heavy today over a replacement for departing Passaic County Sheriff Jerry Speziale, who is headed to the Port Authority Police.

One name making the rounds is that of the state senator from Hawthorne, whose seat could be in danger come 2011.  Girgenti fits the mold.  He’s the chair of the Senate Law and Public Safety commission and fancies himself a law and order man.

Another name in the mix (and the frontrunner in some circles) reportedly is Glenn Brown, former Chief of County Detectives for the Passaic County Prosecutor’s office.

Robert Lyons of Ringwood – director of the Passaic County Police Academy – may have a shot. Other names: Undersheriff Chuck Meyers*, Sheriff’s Officer Leonard Lovely, Paterson Council President Aslon Goow, former Prosecutor Jim Avigliano, former Paterson Mayor Jose Torres, and former Paterson Police Chief Larry Spagnola, who’d have to change parties.

*UPDATE: Acting Undersheriff Meyers told The Record yesterday that he is not interested in the job of fulltime sheriff.
