Thunder on the right

Already behaving like a candidate for Congress in 2012, movement conservative David Larsen of Tewksbury may help budge the moderate U.S. Rep. Leonard Lance (R-Lebanon) to the right over the next two years, and unwittingly energize a strong Democratic Party challenger to Lance in 2012.

Lance is the favorite to defeat former teacher Ed Potosnak of North Plainfield, who became the erstwhile Democratic Party nominee when businessman and Democratic Party fundraiser Zenon Christodoulou finally decided not to run.

Christodoulou left open the possibility of pursuing the 7th Congressional District seat in 2012, working on the hope that the economy would improve by the time President Barack Obama (who won Somerset County in 2008) runs for re-election in two years, on a ticket with U.S. Sen. Bob Menendez (D-Hoboken).

But with Obama’s numbers tanking and the economy still foundering, unless there’s a political landscape reversal that inspires Christodoulou, who has deep fundraising contacts in the Democratic Party, Lance versus Larsen may end up being the more competitive 7th District contest.
