It was our first late night at Ashe (we expect a lot of these!, and it’s finally come to an end. Rafael Nadal won in a grueling three set match tonight over Teimuraz Gabashvili, and Caroline Wozniacki made quick work of the American Chelsey Gullickson. The match ended right before 1 a.m.
Earlier in the night, Maria Sharapova survived a three-set squeaker, and she was none too pleased with herself. When a reporter asked her “what happened out there,” she replied, curtly, “I won the match in three.” Aye!
Fernando Verdasco and Mardy Fish had their own tough first round challenges, but each prevailed in five sets. In the biggest upset of the day, Jeremy Chardy won in straight sets ove Ernests Gulbis. Anna Chakvetadze, a semifinalist here three years ago, lost in straight sets today.
