It’s Free to Look: 200 West 72nd Street

Sometimes it takes a newcomer to really class things up in a neighborhood. As a new renter, we feel this is something you can take to heart.

"Rarely," wrote the Daily News, in a gushy review of this glassy arrival at 200 West 72nd Street, "has a rental building had immediate impact on a neighborhood like The Corner." Apparently, all it takes to transform the Upper West Side from schlubby sweat pants to chic heels was a glass tower, replacing the scurffy turreted Colonial Club.

Now, it's time to do your part. Give your new UWS neighbors a taste of fine cuisine, with a gourmet kitchen, including a wine cooler, full-length pantry, stone countertops and an oversized island. (Granted, even your best culinary efforts may be overshadowed by their excitement about the Trader Joe's downstairs.) Then introduce them to the perplexing world of modern architecture, with the lobby's 1,754-crystal chandelier and 15-foot bronze square rods, meant as a nod to pre-war architecture.

Finally, take them up to the 10,000-square-foot rooftop terrace to show those five-story brownstone dwellers what a stunning view stretching to Central Park really looks like. To truly guarantee your neighbors never go back to pre-war again, show them the chaise lounge chairs, outdoor fireplace, movie screen, and best of all a 12-foot-long misting wall with cool-down spray.

For $16,500 a month, it's no small sacrifice, but just remember, charity begins at home. - Laura Kusisto
