Ebert hasn’t eaten in four years due to surgery related to his cancer fight, but still has vivid food memories and strict rules for rice cooking. The book started as a blog post ode to the device that lauded it for its ability to be used  “as Travis Bickle says, ‘anytime, anywhere.’

Today’s piece ends in a misty-eyed manner, despite a grumpiness on the part of Ebert. He then took questions from Times readers—including one about how best to cook eggs from a backyard henhouse—who had trouble staying on the subject at hand, and kept asking for movie recommendations. “I’m not gonna get started on movies here, because we’d be off to the races,” the critic wrote sensibly.

Earlier this year Ebert sold a memoir to Grand Central, to be published in 2011.
