After four years at Tumblr, CTO Marco Arment is leaving to focus on “independent projects.” Right now Arment’s most active indy project is Instapaper, a program that makes it easy to bookmark and save articles you’re too busy for right now. Instapaper has been growing quickly and Arment is clearly involved at all levels.
From Arment’s blog,
“After four years of my serving as Tumblr’s lead developer, Tumblr’s technical management needs have evolved to require types of experience that I don’t have, and my independent career has offered a lot of opportunities that I haven’t had the time to take full advantage of. While Tumblr’s engineering team continues to grow, instead of continuing full-time, I’ll serve an active consulting role.”
Arment says he’ll stay close to the Tumblr team and advise on future projects. Tumblr has been exploding recently and it’s a shame they are losing such a talented developer. Perhaps the creator of Instapaper, an app designed to help people who are pressed for time, was getting tired of spreading himself so thin.
