White House: Times Story ‘100 Percent Inaccurate’; Baquet Holds Strong

The White House told Politico’s Mike Allen and Andy Barr that a New York Times frontpage story that ran in print today with the headline “Obama advisers weigh offensive against the G.O.P.” is “100 percent inaccurate.”

The story, filed by Jackie Calmes and Michael Shear, reveals that strategy discussions in the White House about how to help Democrats in the midterm elections have included plans to emphasize the link between the Republican Pary to the extremism of the Tea Party.

Times Washington bureau chief Dean Baquet told Politico that the “piece is accurate.” Richard Stevenson, Mr. Baquet’s deputy, added that the sourcing on the piece (the information in the lede is attributed to “people involved in the discussion”) is solid, and the reporters included David Axelrod’s complete denial that the White House is exploring any such strategy near the top of the story.
