Donovan Camp Responds to NARAL Charge

Dan Donovan’s campaign responded to this morning’s charges from NARAL Pro-Choice New York that Donovan helped secure grants for the Crisis Pregnancy Center of New York, an organization that discourages abortion in its counseling.

“Team Donovan will be happy set the record straight,” wrote campaign advisor Menashe Shapiro in a statement. “The timeframe regarding the referenced events took place before Dan was district attorney, further, NARAL’s mercenary admitted today (that) there is nothing in Dan’s record as D.A. that indicates he will do anything other than enforce long settled laws protecting women’s reproductive rights.”

The statement is in keeping with an ongoing back-and-forth in the race so far. Donovan’s opponent, Eric Schneiderman, has sought to paint the Staten Island district attorney as a threat to abortion rights, and each time, Donovan has asserted that he will enforce the laws, regardless of his personal beliefs.

On the issue of Donovan helping secure grants to the pregnancy centers–which were cited in a 2003 Staten Island Advance article–Shapiro wrote: “Additionally for the record, the Borough President held sole authority for allocating funds to all organizations including the one in question, not Dan Donovan.”

Those remarks were bracketed by some return thrusts from the Donovan campaign Schneiderman, which focus on his father’s contributions to NARAL, and the senator’s earmarks during his 12 years in office.

Here’s the full statement:

It’s no surprise that a twelve year Albany insider in cahoots with a special interest group bought off by his rich daddy, the same daddy who has also made questionable donations well into the six-figures to his campaign, is having a hard time with the truth. Team Donovan will be happy set the record straight. The timeframe regarding the referenced events took place before Dan was district attorney, further, NARAL’s mercenary admitted today (that) there is nothing in Dan’s record as D.A. that indicates he will do anything other than enforce long settled laws protecting women’s reproductive rights.

Additionally for the record, the Borough President held sole authority for allocating funds to all organizations including the one in question, not Dan Donovan. However, in keeping with the subject of shady allocations, we look forward to exposing examples of the senator earmarking taxpayer funds to various groups over his 12 years in Albany who in turn, coincidentally either endorsed or made donations to the senator’s campaign(s). As these revelations come to light, we sincerely hope the senator and his special interest buddies will make themselves available for another teleconference with reporters.
