According to a source with close ties to Dov Hikind, the Boro Park Democratic assemblyman is close to backing Republican Mike Grimm for Congress in his race against Mike McMahon.
Hikind remains a major power broker in Orthodox Jewish circles, and his endorsement is one of the more sought-after in the city. Both Brad Lander and Bill de Blasio, the last two city council members who represent the portion of the district that stretches into Park Slope, have sought and received Hikind’s endorsement. Although Hikind usually supports Democrats, and has been known to back even liberal Democrats like de Blasio and Lander in local races, he has been a skeptic of the administration of Barack Obama, especially as it relates to his Middle Eastern policy.
In a special election last year for the other council seat in Boro Park, McMahon backed David Greenfield over Hikind’s hand-picked candidate, Joseph Lazar. Greenfield eventually won.
Hikind did not return a request for comment. The Grimm campaign said they could neither confirm nor deny the information.
