Replacing the Winter Garden

Brookfield Properties has proposed replacing the winter garden at the World Financial Center. The idea is to create a more inviting connection to the street and the new World Trade Center site.

Some residents and even City Planning Commission chair Amanda Burden are concerned about the decision to overhaul the current structure.

The winter garden was heavily damaged during the attacks of 9/11.

It was actually one of the very first things rebuilt after the disaster at Ground Zero. Reconstruction was completed in under a year.

The marble staircase was also rebuilt. It still functions as an amphitheater and meeting place, though it's original purpose of providing a connection to Tower 2 no longer exists. It is the removal of this stair that 9/11 partisans so object to.

Not only is the stairway symbolic, but it provides the best view of the rebuilding of Ground Zero in the city and is a favorite with tourists.

Brookfield argues that a new underground passageway connecting the World Financial Center, the World Trade Center and the transit hub require the removal of the stairs.

Not only will the new Winter Garden provide better circulation and make room for new retail, but with catwalks still providing views of the Trade Center, who but nostalgists would not see this stair-free space as an improvement?
