Sidney Harman’s Newsweek Takeover is Official

Keith Kelly reports this morning that the Newsweek sale has officially closed, nearly five months after the sale was announced by the Washington Post Co. in May. Mr. Harman said that he hopes to announce a new editor “within a couple of weeks.” Nobody is on the record yet, but the conventional wisdom is that Mr. Harman would like Tina Brown to run his magazine. Ms. Brown’s availability will depend on how ongoing talks between Mr. Harman and Barry Diller wrap up (nobody can say exactly what the two men have to offer each other financially). Mr. Harman has already done a round of housecleaning at the company, but now he needs to find a new office and start staffing up with some new talent.
