Governor Chris Christie today formally renamed the “New Jersey Trauma Center” at University Hospital the “Eric Munoz Trauma Center,” in honor of the late Assemblyman Eric Munoz (R-Summit), a trauma surgeon at UMDNJ’s University Hospital and professor of surgery UMDNJ for over 20 years.
Dr. Munoz died last year on March 30.
“Eric Munoz was a dedicated public servant, a skilled and respected surgeon and teacher, and a friend who is dearly missed to this day,” said Christie. “Today, I am honored to take this action to honor and continue his memory in a small but significant way. As anyone who was fortunate enough to cross paths with Eric knows, his memory and legacy are best remembered through the work he dedicated himself to – the people he saved and the countless lives he improved through his work as a surgeon and a lawmaker.”
Governor Christie signed the legislation at a ceremony at UMDNJ’s University Hospital. Assemblywoman Nancy Munoz, the late assemblyman’s widow, and members of the Munoz family joined Christie and Senators Robert Gordon (D-Fair Lawn), Tom Kean Jr., (R-Westfield), Teresa Ruiz (D-Newark); and Assemblymembers Jon Bramnick, Albert Coutinho, Annette Quijano, Frederick Scalera, and Connie Wagner.
Also present was North Ward Democratic leader Steve Adubato, Sr., who was once sucessfully operated on by the Republican politician, and ever after maintained a close friendship with Dr. Munoz.
