The ‘Ring’ Bridge Works, The Times Is Underwhelmed

The journey to Valhalla finally went off without a hitch last night at the Met’s new performance of Das Rheingold and The Times was ecstatic — exclamation points in the lede!

But while the music was “splendid” as ever, the effect, which failed to work properly on the opera’s opening night, was deemed “somewhat cumbersome.” It turns out that the trick involves using body doubles who “broke the dramatic mystique” by virtue of not being the singers.

As with the Talk of the Town piece this week about Ring Nuts, audience members cheered director Robert Lepage at the end. So ends the “epic production journey.”
