South Dakota Senator John Thune will headline a fundraiser for New York’s Conservative Party on October 19, after meeting Chairman Mike Long at an event earlier this year.
“I got a clear–I guess you could say–feeling that he was looking around for the future,” Long told me this morning. “I thought it would be a good hit for him to come to New York to talk to some our people that attend our events, and raise his profile.”
Thune, who defeated Tom Daschle in 2004, is currently exploring a presidential bid–appearing on an increasing number of political shows in recent weeks and re-framing his TARP vote to be more in line with the current Republican mood. He told the local press he would decide by next spring.
“He’s been making a lot of public appearances lately so I want to see how this unfolds,” Long said. “It’s very early yet, but I think he possibly could have what it takes.”
