A third candidate for mayor has emerged in West New York, strengthening the prospects of Mayor Silverio “Sal” Vega for re-election.
City sources say businesswoman Fior D’Aliza Frias is ready to formally declare her candidacy this weekend. That would make her challenger number two behind Dr. Felix Roque, who failed in a bid earlier this year to summon the requisite votes to oust Vega in a special election.
Roque sees the news as positive.
“The more people we can get against this guy, the better,” he said. “The best way to destroy an enemy is to hit him on different fronts. It makes me feel really good. The more people to fight and debilitate him, the better.”
With a friendly welcome to the contest, Roque said Frias’ coming candidacy simply makes him want to redouble his own efforts.
“They’re waiting on me to liberate them,” he said of his supporters. “This is like the Iraqi War. I started the march and I will continue the march. I’m a soldier, and I am determined.”
