HBO Films has snagged the rights to a biopic about the brash stand-up comedian Sam Kinison, Variety reports.
The project will be based on a memoir by the funnyman’s brother and was originally slated to be a TV movie done through Universal. HBO apparently plans to take the new iteration to the big screen.
Rich Wilkes, of The Jerky Boys and Airheads, will pen the screenplay, and he should be well suited to document Mr. Kinison’s rise from former preacher to late-night staple and all-around pop culture personality.
The hefty, hirsute comedian Dan Fogler was set to play the lead role for the TV movie, but there’s no confirmation that he’s still on board.
