As if The National Enquirer filing for bankruptcy wasn’t enough bad news for one day, Starbucks locations across the city are out of their Tall cups. It is a disaster the likes of which New York has not known since Scoop sold out of Uggs way back in 2004.
A barista at one of what seems like the thousands of Starbucks outlets in midtown explained that New Yorkers will have to carry oversized, half-full Grande cups–don’t forget, Talls are actually 12-ounce smalls–because they are under strict orders not to open up the holiday cups. Those wait in probably-red stacks just behind the Employee’s Only door until tomorrow, when the highly awaited unveiling of the limited edition, oh-so-collectible cups arrive. (Apparently this is a national obsession.)
At least now we all have something to look forward to.
UPDATE: A Starbucks spokesperson denied any shortage:
We’re not aware of any cup shortage in New York, unless just one or two stores have temporarily run out of cups. We don’t have any information to share, but if you have further details on what you’re referring to, please do let us know.
However, The Observer knows this to be the case at at least five of those thousands of franchises. Coincidence? More like conspiracy.
