The De Niro Penthouse

The original proposal included a copper mansard roof atop the two-story penthouse. Not only was it too large, but the Landmarks Preservation Commission had not approved it. Were the commissioners to make an exception for De Niro, who knows what chicanery might ensue. Everyone would start abusing the commission until there were no landmarks left!
The first step in satisfying the commission was removing the roof. The rest of the penthouse was left as is.
The architect, Axel Vervoordt, then added a series of cubic pergolas to give the roof some depth.
A frame for providing definition and shade to the roof, as well as a foundation for foliage. Duh!

Vines will hang from the pergolas, satisfying the natural tenedencies of Veervordt's Wabi design philosophy as well as the private tendencies of the moneyed guests likely to occupy the penthouse.

Before.
After.

The commissioners might have let the roof slide if it didn't set a bad precedent and weren't visible from the street, both no-nos.
The mansard roof was deemed out of context with Tribeca's loft buildings, something too residential and not industrial. And yet vine-covered pergolas are O.K. ... Go figure.
Looking south, the mansard roof would have been less visible.

The foliage seems plenty peculiar.
This is the foyer, still under construction.
Befitting the spare tenets of Vervoordt's design philosophy, the finished foyer, seen in a redering, does not look that different from the unfinished one.

The living room, in an as-yet-unlivable state.
As the rendering demonstrates, the finished room will be idea for star-studded parties.
