A musical pirate map that’s full of buried treasures

Map of Metal turns rock’s most maligned genre into a totally exhaustive, interactive, and endlessly entertaining website.

Designed by Nick Grant and Patrick Galbraith, the site traces the form all the way through from its 1960s beginnings to its latter-day balkanization into crazily specific genres (Black Ambient, Mathcore, Crust Punk, Swedish Death Metal, and so forth). Die-hards can order the Map as a poster, but the online version includes hundreds of sound files—and doubles as a heavy-metal radio station. Our one complaint? The lack of a search function is so frustrating, it’s enough to make you bang your head.
