Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke’s many critics should take comfort in the fact that he’s one of the least expensive central bankers on the planet. For all his controversial extraordinary monetary maneuverings, Bernanke makes a mere $196,700 a year, according to Bloomberg.

In contrast, Britain’s Mervyn King takes home nearly half a million in annual salary! Among the central bankers who make less money than Mr. Bernanke is Brazil’s unfortunate Henrique de Campos Meirelles, who takes home a mere $83,185 a year.

As we navigate a stagnant economy, rising unemployment and fears of accelerating inflation, Mr. Bernanke’s detractors should at least acknowledge that when it comes to monetary policy, as in all things, you get what you pay for.
