Mr. Madoff’s lawyer, Ira Lee Sorkin, told The Times that Bernie is staying away from the service “out of consideration for the family’s privacy.” Mr. Sorkin also told The Times that Mr. Madoff will hold a private service from jail.

Bernie’s absence from the proceedings is understandable, given that his wife, Ruth, reportedly blames him for their son’s death:

Ruth is “totally disgusted with [Bernie] and blames him for her son’s death. She thinks this is the end of the family,” Oppenheimer said, quoting Madoff relatives and sources close to the family.

As for Bernie, “family members don’t think [he’s] going to survive this.”
