Governor commutes gun sentence

Gov. Chris Christie today commuted the sentence of Brian Aitken, who in 2009 was sentenced to seven years in prison for illegally possessing three handguns.

Aitken brought the guns from Colorado where he lived before relocating back to his home state of New Jersey. Before bringing the guns across state lines Aitken had asked State Police how they should be transported and was told unloaded and locked in the trunk of his car. But a 911 call fro his mother after a family dispute caused police to stop his car, where they found the handguns. He was arrested, tried and convicted and sentenced to seven years in prison.

According to the order signed by Christie earlier today, his will be released from prison “as soon as administratively possible.”
