Chuck Schumer has been railing against Republicans in recent days for not only refusing to accept a tax cut for the middle class unless one is included for the wealthy, but refusing to accept a tax cut for people making under $1 million unless millionaires get one as well.
Republicans, for their part, have denounced Schumer’s plan as a gambit, and say they prefer to let the negotiations with the White House play out.
Schumer has been using the Republicans’ intransigence as a way of showing that they favor the rich.
“The number one goal of the Republican Party is not jobs, is not helping the middle class, is not getting our green energy going, is not helping small businesses hire new people…it’s to give the millionaires a huge tax break and hold it hostage so that the middle class won’t get their tax break.”
It is worth noting that although Schumer calls for a $1 million ceiling, it would put him at odds with the White House–and many Democratic activists–who want to not continue to Bush tax cuts for those making over $250,000.
