The Spoils of Oprah’s Friendship

Dr. Phil McGraw first met Winfrey when he was part of the legal team that helped her win a libel suit from Amarillo Texas Beef. Winfrey was so impressed that she invited him to appear on the show as a relationship expert and life strategist. Now McGraw has his own talk show, produced by Harpo Studios, which will be syndicated on OWN. He will also be a judge and panelist on OWN reality shows.

Personal finance expert Suze Orman has appeared on Oprah's show many times and has a column in O Magazine. She will be a panelist on Ask Oprah’s All-Stars, and will help Duchess Sarah Ferguson get her life together on a documentary series Finding Sarah.

Columbia University Medical School Professor and Cardiothoracic surgeon Dr. Mehmet Oz started appearing as a health expert on The Oprah Winfrey Show in 2004. Since then he's published self-help and diet books and now has his own syndicated series, co-produced by Harpo Productions. He will apear alongside Suze Orman as a judge on Ask Oprah's All-Stars.

Celebrity Diagnosis

Chicago interior decorator Nate Berkus was Oprah's go-to design expert on The Oprah Winfrey Show. He now has his own show, The Nate Berkus Show, produced by NBC Universal. No word on whether he's joining OWN or not, but they are casting for families who need home makeovers.

Oprah's best friend (the thought of whom brought Winfrey to tears in a recent Barbara Walters interview) and a longtime radio and broadcast reporter, Gayle King will have her own daily talk show on OWN.


A regular Oprah Winfrey show and O Magazine contributor, Peter Walsh is a professional organizer, who was on TLC's Clean Sweep and has his own line of organizational products at OfficeMax. According to Peter Walsh's website, he is currently casting families for an OWN show reality show called Enough Already! in which Walsh will help them achieve their organization goals.

Robin Smith is a psychologist and regular on Oprah. She wrote the bestseller Lies at the Altar: The Truth About Great Marriages. The Times reports she's coming to OWN, too, and there's an outdated listing on a reality television casting site for "Los Angeles Families with relatable problems that could use Dr. Robin's help in bringing the family back together."


Oprah's trainer and inventor of the Best Life product seal, Bob Greene is reported to be joining the OWN network, although in what capacity remains a mystery.
