Christie said Webber’s multiple duties were becoming too much for the assemblyman who also runs his own private law practice.

Webber unexpectedly resigned the state party chairmanship Wednesday, leading several politicos to wonder if he had been ousted by Christie.  News that the governor was upset over a letter Webber had written to Democratic State Chairman John Wisniewski indicating that a deal had been cut over the budget for the redistricting committee furthered speculation that the governor had grown tired of Webber and called for a replacement.

But while GOP sources said the letter was the last straw, sources close to both men said it had nothing to do with Webber’s resignation.  Christie himself denied the claim during his press conference, telling repoters that he and Webber discussed the resignation but that it was Webber’s choice given the number of things on his plate.
