Gov. Chris Christie drew sustained cheers from several hundred anti-abortion demonstrators gathered outside the Statehouse steps Monday as he addressed their cause.
“Every life is precious and a gift from God,’’ the governor told activists who assembled to protest the 38th anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court Roe v. Wade decision that legalized abortion. That ruling was handed down on Jan. 22, 1973.
He told the crowd that he came to an appreciation of this cause when 15 years ago he listened to the heartbeat at 3 months of his unborn daughter Sarah.
“At that moment I realized being on the sidelines was not something I could live with,’’ he told the people assembled on West State Street in Trenton for a rally organized by New Jersey Right to Life that included other speakers.
He urged the people to continue their fight but to do so calmly and with respect for others. He pledged that as long as he is in office, they will have an ally in the effort to overturn the abortion law.
