The Atlantic was profitable in 2010, for the first time in decades, according to a press release.
“Overall advertising revenue grew 37%, with print advertising up 27% and digital advertising surging nearly 70%. Atlantic LIVE-the industry-leading events division behind franchises such as the Aspen Ideas Festival and the Washington Ideas Forum-grew revenues 37%”, they wrote.
According to the glowing Times piece that pre-empted the good news (they predicted a $1.8 million profit), the secret to their success was thinking like a venture-backed start-up, or ‘aggressive self-cannibalization’, as Atlantic Media Company President Justin Smith put it.
Hard to say anything but ‘Congrats, guys!’ We’re gnawing our own foot as we type.
