LGBT Lawmakers Raise for Quinn

A reader passed along the following invite to a fundraiser this week for Council Speaker Christine Quinn at RDV, a night club in the Meatpacking District.

It is worth noting that the event will be hosted by three of the city’s most prominent gay lawmakers–city Councilmembers Danny Dromm and and Jimmy Van Bramer, and West Side Assembly member Danny O’Donnell–who will be joined by prominent LGBT activists, including country singer Chely Wright, Bravo star Andy Cohen and activist David Mixner.

There is some disagreement in political circles about how popular Quinn, who is expected to vie to become the city’s first openly gay mayor in 2013, remains in LGBT circles. Her perch as Speaker of the City Council makes her one of the highest-ranking LGBT politicians in the nation, but she grabbed just over 50 percent of the vote in her re-election bid in 2009, despite running in the most heavily LGBT district in the country.

Quinn’s candidacy, however, could quickly turn into a movement if LGBT voters and others sympathetic to the cause see in Quinn the possibility of electing the first openly gay mayor of America’s largest city, and having LGBT spokespeople in her corner is bound to help make that case.

If you want to join the cause, tickets go for $50 a head. Click on the invite to learn more…
