Angel Fuentes, Democratic candidate for the Assembly in the 5th Legislative District, is the Camden City Council President and since 1994 has represented the 4th Ward, which includes North Camden, Cramer Hill, Cooper Grant, Downtown Camden and the Waterfront.
As Council President, Angel has used his public and private sector experience to promote initiatives aimed at improving the quality of life for those who live and work in Camden. He created the Human Relations Commission and has fought to improve social justice for the city’s residents. He pushed for the creation of improved youth and senior citizens programs; helped establish the Taxicab Commission, the Public Safety Council, and the Asian-American and Municipal Aids and HIV Advisory Boards. He introduced a resolution supporting a Pledge of Reform to the citizens of Camden for a Ten-Point Plan to promote redevelopment in Camden’s neighborhoods. He has also led the effort to cut waste and other fiscal inefficiencies in city government, while at the same time making the government more accessible, accountable and responsive to the needs of the people.
Fuentes has spearheaded other notable projects, including the annual Business Summit and the Youth Summit, as well as the annual tennis and volleyball charitable tournaments that raise money to enhance programs and services to various non-profit organizations throughout the city.
He is on the Board of Directors for the Center for Family Services, Camden County Chapter of the American Red Cross, Cramer Hill Lions Club, Greater Camden Partnership, Cooper’s Ferry Development Board, American Cancer Society, and on the Strategic Planning Committee for the United States Hispanic Leadership Institute. He is a member of the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO). He was appointed by the governor to the state Tax Lien Financing Corporation and Municipal Economic and Recovery Board.
Fuentes, who is a Patient Relations Representative at Cooper Hospital, worked his way through Woodrow Wilson High School and earned a B.A. degree in Philosophy from St. John Vianney College and Seminary. He lives in the Cramer Hill section of the city and ha s a son, Josuel Angel, and a daughter, Mariangelis.
He is engaged to Nancy Ruiz, who is a school teacher at Wiggins School and the mother of one daughter, Brittany.
