Gov. Chris Christie came to Union City today, one of the most devout Democratic strongholds in the state, and he was well received, to say the least.
This is the town that gave the state Democratic U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez, who might as well be Christie’s arch-nemesis. It’s Havana on the Hudson, a Cuban landing spot, and one of the most densely-populated cities in the country.
Its mayor, Brain Stack, is a Democrat, albeit one who battled single-handedly against the entrenched county machine, but he’s also a powerful state senator, a dual-office holder – something Christie has denounced in the past.
That all said, Stack was teeter-tottering and flirting with endorsing Christie in 2009 over another Hudson County man, Jon Corzine.
Stack never did endorse Christie, but the two have teamed up at times in the legislature and grown into a formidable cross-aisle alliance.
Today, as Stack introduced the governor, he finally gave the endorsement.
Stack told the crowd, please welcome: “the greatest governor the state has ever had,” Chris Christie. Applause.
