Nellie Pou (D-Paterson)

Nellie Pou represents the 35th Legislative District in the New Jersey State Senate. The 35th District includes the City of Paterson and the Boroughs of Haledon, North Haledon, and Prospect Park in Passaic County, as well as the City of Garfield and the Borough of Elmwood Park in Bergen County. Senator Pou is the Vice-Chair of the Senate Higher Education Committee, and is a member of the Senate Budget & Appropriations, and Judiciary Committees, and is Chair of the Legislative Latino Caucus.

 

Ms. Pou first won election to the State Legislature in November 1997. As a member of the General Assembly (1997-2012), she served on the Assembly Appropriations Committee for over ten years, including six years as its Chair. Additional Assembly committee service includes: Budget, Education, Judiciary, Housing, Senior Issues, Health & Human Services, and State Leasing & Utilization. Ms. Pou has also served on several bicameral committees: the Joint Budget Oversight Committee, the Joint Committee on Public Schools, and a 2006 committee pertaining to property tax reform, which she co-chaired.

 

In November 2011, Ms. Pou was elected to the State Senate. She holds the dual distinctions of being the first woman and the first Latina to represent the 35thDistrict in the state Legislature. She is a veteran of the City of Paterson’s municipal administration, having served in various capacities for over three decades.

 

Senator Pou is a consummate advocate for the needs of children, women, and families. She is a member of the Women’s Democratic Caucus, the National Order of Women Legislators, Women in Government, the National Foundation of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials, and the National Foundation of Women Legislators.
