Patrick Diegnan was born in South Plainfield, New Jersey as the last of seven children. Both of his parents emigrated from Ireland in the late 1920’s. They experienced the depression first hand. As a result all of the Diegnan children were taught the value of hard work and the importance of family and faith. Assemblyman Diegnan graduated from South Plainfield High School in 1966 where he was honored by induction into its Hall of Fame in 2002. He worked his way through Seton Hall University and Seton Hall Law School.
Upon graduation from law school he opened a private law firm in his home town and became a member of the faculty at Middlesex County College where he taught Business Law and Accounting until 1983. Availability of higher education to all members of society, regardless of economic status, has always been a top priority to the Assemblyman. He was therefore honored when Assembly Speaker Joseph Roberts named him as the first Chairman of the newly created Higher Education Committee in 2008.
Assemblyman Diegnan now serves as the Chairman of the Education Committee. He has served as Parliamentarian of the General Assembly since 2005 and as Deputy Speaker since 2008. He is also a member of the Regulated Professions committee and the Consumer Affairs Committee. The greatest joy in Patrick Diegnan’s life is his family. He and his wife Anita have been married for 33 years. They have two children Heather and Tara. Heather is married to Frank Paragano. On February 9, 2009 Heather and Frank graced the family with a beautiful baby girl named Vanessa.
