Peter J. Barnes, III has been an Edison resident for over 45 years. Since joining the General Assembly in 2007, Pete has sponsored numerous bills, including the Dismal Swamp Preservation Act, which will protect over 1,000 acres of Middlesex County swampland from overdevelopment. Pete currently serves on the Appropriations Committee, the Environment and Solid Waste Committee, and was appointed Vice-chair of the Judiciary Committee.
Legislative highlights of Pete’s time in the Assembly include the recent passage of Kyleigh’s Law, which Governor Corzine signed into law in April of 2009. Kyleigh’s Law promises to improve the safety of young drivers by providing identification to probationary licensed drivers; ensuring law enforcement officials can identify them.
Before serving in the New Jersey General Assembly, Pete served on the Edison Municipal Council, with terms as council president, vice-president, and as a member of the planning board. He has served as chair of the township’s Finance Board, Insurance Commission, Public Safety Commission, and Housing Authority. He also served as the council liaison to the Board of Education and the Environmental Commission.
A member of the J.P. Stevens High School Hall of Honor, Assemblyman Barnes is a member of the Parish council at St. Francis Cathedral. He is also a coach in the Metuchen-Edison YMCA Basketball League, and coaches the St. Francis CYO basketball team. He has been a manager and coach of the North Edison baseball and softball league.
Barnes Graduated from J.P. Stevens High School and has a Bachelor’s of Arts from Gettysburg College, a Master’s of Business Administration from Fairleigh Dickinson University and a Juris Doctor from Widener University of Law.
Pete and his wife, Katie, have three children and currently live in Edison.
